Everly heard them arguing even before she opened the door to the yard. Caden and Luka. She froze, pressing her ear to the wood.

“If I find out that you had anything to do with her getting hurt.” It was Luka, but strangely he sounded more annoyed than worried.

“You will what?” Caden’s voice held a razor-thin edge of danger. “You are on the verge of being an old man, serving a greedy Low Lady. You can’t touch me.”

“I know you aren't who you say you are. The records of a Seed Bearer named Caden, given to Mistress Abigail, daughter of Maureen, are dated eighty-two years ago.”

Everly pulled back from the door, a hand over her mouth. Eighty-two years? He didn't look a day over twenty-two, twenty-five, maybe. Trembling, she pressed herself against the wood again, grateful for its support.

“It's a common name.”

“Not that common.” Her mother's Bound Man sounded closer to the door, as though he was walking towards the house. “I will find out what's going on. And when I do, I am going to make sure both you and your Mistress are uncovered.”

“Good. Luck.”

She pulled back from the door, running a hand through her hair in an effort to look natural.

Luka came crashing through a moment later, stopping short just before running straight into her. He glowered at her. “Mistress.”

“Luka.” She answered, forcing her voice to be steady.

“Are you going out with… Mistress Abigail’s Seed Bearer?”

“Yes.” She forced a smile, “We seem to be trading today. She will be using Dimitri, so she offered that Caden give me riding lessons. She says they will be needed when I become a proper Lady after the ceremony.”

Glazing over his shoulder, out through the still half open door, he nodded. “Be wary.” He dropped his voice low, “We wouldn't want anything further to happen to you.”

She nodded, flattening herself against the wall to allow him to pass. Her heart felt like it was racing to escape her chest. She turned her head to see Caden standing in the open doorway, anger plainly scrawled across his face.

“What did he say to you?”

She swallowed, unsure whom to trust. “Nothing.” The look on his face let her know she needed more of an answer than that. “Just to be careful.” It wasn't a total lie.

He looked at her for a moment longer before nodding. “Let's go.”

She let out a breath, glancing down the now empty hallway where Luka had gone, before following him out the door. She wanted to ask him about what her mother’s Bound Man had said. About him being over eighty years old, but some part of her, deep down, said now was not the time. To let them get out of the city first. Instead, she stepped up to Moonshine, sticking out her palm, so the mare could smell it. Goliath bumped her back with his nose, jealous of the attention of his companion.

“He seems eager today.” She finally said, turning to pet the giant black stallion.

“He's eager to be out of here every day.
